On a backsplash the details are the job: where the pattern is centered, how the cuts land at the cabinets and how the tile meets the countertop.

Overview

Backsplash design and installation, planned before the first tile

The backsplash protects the wall behind the sink and range from water, grease and heat, and it ties the countertop and cabinets together. Because the area is small, the tile choice can be bolder than you might risk on a floor. The three styles we install most are subway tile, in a classic offset or a stacked or herringbone pattern; mosaic sheets in glass, stone or porcelain; and large-format tile, which gives a calm surface with very few grout lines.

Each one asks something different of the wall. Subway tile is forgiving, but the pattern has to be centered on something, usually the range or the sink window, so the cuts at each end match. Mosaic sheets need careful spacing so the sheet seams disappear. Large-format tile shows every wave in the drywall, so the wall has to be flat before it goes up. We sort that out at the estimate, along with how the tile ends: a metal edge profile, a bullnose piece or a clean line at the cabinet side.

A backsplash goes in after the countertops, since the tile sits on top of the counter and the joint between them is sealed with flexible caulk, not grout. If you are replacing counters or cabinets as well, the order matters, and we can plan the tile as part of a larger kitchen remodeling project in Jacksonville. What's Included

What a backsplash installation includes

Design & Layout

We help you settle the tile, pattern, grout color and edge detail, then dry-lay or mark the layout so you see where the cuts will fall before anything is set.

  • Subway, mosaic or large-format
  • Pattern and focal point chosen
  • Grout color matched to the tile

Wall Preparation

Old backsplash tile or laminate strips are removed, damaged drywall is repaired and the wall is cleaned and flattened so the new tile bonds and sits even.

  • Old backsplash removed
  • Drywall patched
  • Counters and cabinets protected

Outlets & Switches

Power is turned off, cover plates come off and tile is cut closely around each box. Box extenders bring the outlets and switches forward so they sit flush with the new tile surface.

  • Tight cuts around boxes
  • Box extenders fitted
  • Cover plates reinstalled flat

Tile Setting

Tile is set level from the countertop up with consistent joints, wrapped around windows and finished at the ends with the trim agreed in the layout.

  • Level lines checked
  • Consistent grout joints
  • Edges trimmed cleanly

Grout & Sealing

Joints are grouted in the chosen color and cleaned without haze. Cement grout and natural stone are sealed. The joint at the countertop gets color-matched flexible caulk.

  • Grout haze removed
  • Sealer where the material calls for it
  • Caulk at the countertop joint

Paired With Countertop & Cabinet Work

If counters or cabinets are changing, the backsplash is scheduled after they are in so the tile fits the finished lines, including under-cabinet lighting and the range hood.

  • Installed after countertops
  • Fits new cabinet lines
  • Coordinated with the remodel

Our Process

How a backsplash is installed

01

Measure & Choose

We measure the wall area, count outlets and windows, and go over tile, pattern and edge options with you.

02

Protect & Remove

Countertops, sink and range are covered. The old backsplash comes off and the wall is repaired where needed.

03

Lay Out the Pattern

The centerline and starting row are marked so cuts are balanced at the ends and around the window or hood.

04

Set the Tile

Tile is set from the counter up, cut around outlets and switches, and finished with trim at exposed edges.

05

Grout

After the tile has set, joints are grouted and cleaned. The countertop joint and inside corners are caulked.

06

Seal & Walk Through

Sealer is applied where required, cover plates go back on and we walk the finished backsplash with you.

FAQ

Backsplash Installation Questions

After. The tile rests on the finished countertop, and the height of the counter sets the bottom line of the backsplash. Installing tile first leaves a gap or forces the countertop installer to work around it.

The tile is cut around each electrical box and the outlets and switches are brought forward with box extenders so they sit flush with the new surface and the cover plates lie flat. If you want outlets moved, added or hidden under the cabinets, that is decided before tiling so it is not cut into finished tile later.

Cement-based grout should be sealed, especially behind the range and sink where grease and water land. Some premium grouts are stain-resistant and do not need a sealer. Natural stone tile such as marble should be sealed regardless of the grout.

Sometimes, if the old tile is flat and firmly bonded, but it adds thickness at the outlets, cabinets and edges. In most kitchens removing the old backsplash and repairing the wall gives a cleaner result, and we will tell you which applies after looking at it.

It depends on the square footage, the tile and pattern you choose, how many outlets and windows there are and whether an old backsplash has to come off. See our pricing page for how we price tile work, or call (904) 520-1994 for a free written estimate.
