Why preparation decides how the floor turns out
Vinyl plank follows the shape of the subfloor. Tile cracks or sounds hollow when the substrate moves or is not flat. Neither product fixes a bad floor underneath — they reveal it. That is why we treat preparation as its own stage of the job, not something squeezed into installation day.
Typical preparation includes clearing adhesive, staples and tack strips left by the old floor, securing loose or squeaking areas, grinding down high spots, filling low spots, and confirming the substrate is clean and sound before anything new goes down.
On a concrete slab, flat and clean is only part of it. Moisture rising through the slab can loosen adhesive and damage the floor above, so concrete moisture testing is part of preparing a slab for moisture-sensitive flooring.
We check all of this during the free in-home measurement and tell you what the floor actually needs. If preparation is required, it goes in the written estimate up front rather than appearing as a surprise mid-job.

If the subfloor has noticeable high or low spots, yes. Vinyl plank follows the shape underneath it and tile needs a flat, sound substrate — especially large-format tile. We check flatness during the free measurement.

Yes. Adhesive residue, thinset, staples and tack strips are cleared as part of preparing the substrate.
Often, where the cause can be reached from above once the old flooring is removed. Structural issues are a different matter and we say so plainly if that is what we find.
