Waterproofing
Waterproofing: the part of the bathroom you never see
Tile and grout shed water but they are not waterproof. Water and vapor move through grout joints every time the shower runs, so the thing that keeps a shower from rotting the wall framing or leaking into the slab is the waterproofing system behind the tile. When older Jacksonville showers fail, the cause is almost always here: no membrane, a membrane that stops short of the wet area, unsealed corners, or a pan without enough slope to the drain.
In a shower we build, the floor is sloped to the drain, the waterproofing is continuous across the pan, the curb and the walls up to the wet height, seams, corners, niches, benches and every plumbing penetration are sealed, and the drain assembly works with the membrane. Bathroom floors outside the shower get the right substrate for tile, and the joints where tile meets the tub or the floor are finished with flexible sealant rather than grout.
