Grout Repair & Regrouting in Jacksonville, FL

Fresh grout can make sound tile look new again. It cannot fix tile that is loose or a shower that is leaking behind the wall, so we check for both before we start.

Overview

New grout for tile that is still worth keeping

If the tile is solid and you still like it, regrouting is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh a shower or a floor. The old grout is removed to a consistent depth, the joints are cleaned out and new grout is packed in. Smearing a thin layer over the top of old grout does not bond and flakes off within months, which is why removal is the larger share of the work.

Grout fails for different reasons and the reason matters. Stained or discolored grout is cosmetic. Grout that has worn low or gone sandy is age and cleaning chemicals. Grout that keeps cracking in the same line usually means the tile is moving, and that needs a tile repair first, otherwise the new grout cracks in the same place.

Regrouting is a surface repair. In a shower, the waterproofing is behind the tile, not in the grout. If water has been getting through for a long time and the wall is soft or tiles are falling off, new grout will not solve it. We will show you what we found and talk about rebuilding that area with a proper tile installation.

What's Included

Grout repair and regrouting services

Cracked & Missing Grout

Open joints let water and dirt in under the tile edge. We cut out the failed sections, check that the neighboring tile is bonded and refill the joints.

  • Spot repairs or full rooms
  • Loose tile flagged before grouting
  • Color matched to existing grout

Stained & Discolored Grout

When cleaning no longer brings the color back, the grout is replaced rather than painted over. It is also a chance to change the grout color.

  • Full-depth removal of stained joints
  • Option to choose a new color
  • Even joint lines across the room

Shower Regrouting

Walls, floor, niche and curb are regrouted, and old caulk is stripped from the corners and replaced with mildew-resistant silicone.

  • Walls, shower floor and niche
  • Old caulk fully removed
  • New silicone at corners and base

Tile Floor Regrouting

Kitchen, bathroom, entry and living-area tile floors. Joints are cleaned out, regrouted and sealed, with flexible sealant where the floor meets tubs and cabinets.

  • Kitchens, baths and entries
  • Sanded or unsanded to suit the joint
  • Perimeter joints left flexible

Grout vs. Caulk Corrections

Grout is rigid and cracks wherever two surfaces move against each other. Those joints belong to silicone: inside corners, wall-to-floor, around the tub and at the curb.

  • Cracked corner grout removed
  • 100% silicone at changes of plane
  • Color-matched to the grout

Grout Sealing

Cement-based grout is porous. A penetrating sealer slows down staining and makes cleaning easier. Some modern grouts do not need it, and we will tell you which you have.

  • Applied after the grout has cured
  • Penetrating sealer, no surface film
  • Care instructions for cleaning

Our Process

How regrouting works

01

Inspect the Tile

We check for loose or hollow tile, soft walls and signs of a leak, so grout is not being asked to fix a bigger problem.

02

Remove Old Grout & Caulk

Joints are cut out to a consistent depth and old caulk is stripped from corners. Dust is vacuumed as we go.

03

Regrout

New grout is packed fully into the joints, tooled to an even profile and the tile face is cleaned of haze.

04

Silicone & Seal

Corners and perimeter joints get silicone. After the grout cures, sealer is applied where needed and we tell you when the shower can be used.

FAQ

Grout Repair Questions

Not reliably. A thin layer of new grout over old does not have enough depth to bond and tends to flake off. The old grout needs to be cut out to a consistent depth first so the new grout can fill the joint properly.

Anywhere two surfaces meet and can move independently: inside corners of the shower, where the wall meets the floor or the tub, around the curb and where tile meets a different material. Grout in those joints cracks. Silicone stays flexible and keeps the joint closed.

It can stop water entering through open joints, but grout is not the waterproofing. The waterproof layer is behind the tile. If the shower is leaking into the wall or the room below, we need to find out why before recommending regrouting, and the fix may be a rebuild of that area.

Standard cement-based grout benefits from a penetrating sealer, which slows staining and makes cleaning easier. It needs to be reapplied from time to time. Some newer high-performance and epoxy grouts do not require sealing. We will tell you which type is going in.

It depends on the size of the area, the tile size and joint width, the condition of the existing grout and how much caulk needs to be replaced. See our pricing page for how we price projects, or call (904) 520-1994 for a free written estimate.
