Waterproof describes the surface you walk on. A floor that lasts also needs the slab under it checked and prepared, and that is where we start.

Luxury vinyl plank flooring installed by Braga Remodeling in a Jacksonville bedroom

Overview

Floors built for how Northeast Florida homes are used

Water gets on floors here in ordinary ways: a dog bowl, a dripping swimsuit, an ice maker line, a back door left open in a summer storm, a mop used more often because of sand. Carpet holds that moisture and traditional laminate or hardwood can swell from it. The two materials that take it in stride are vinyl plank with a waterproof core and porcelain or ceramic tile.

For most whole-home projects, waterproof luxury vinyl plank is the practical answer. It runs continuously through living areas, kitchens, hallways and bedrooms, feels warmer and quieter underfoot than tile, and a spill left overnight will not swell the planks. For rooms that get truly wet, such as bathrooms, showers, laundry rooms and entries from the pool, tile installation is the stronger choice because the tile and a properly waterproofed assembly are made for standing water. Many homes end up with both: LVP through the main living space and tile in the bathrooms.

It helps to be clear about what waterproof means. It means the plank or tile itself is not damaged by water. It does not mean the floor seals the room like a pool liner. Water from a large leak can still travel through the joints of a floating floor or around the edges and sit underneath, and moisture can also rise from the concrete slab below. No floor is indestructible, either: vinyl can be scratched or dented by heavy furniture, and tile can chip if something hard is dropped on it. That is why slab moisture, flatness and floor preparation matter as much as the product on the box.

What's Included

Waterproof flooring options and where each fits

Waterproof LVP, Whole Home

Rigid-core vinyl plank installed as a floating floor through living areas, kitchens, halls and bedrooms, with few or no thresholds between rooms where the layout allows.

  • Core does not absorb water
  • Comfortable underfoot
  • Suits pets and kids

Tile for Wet Areas

Porcelain or ceramic tile for bathrooms, showers, laundry rooms and pool entries. In showers the waterproofing is a membrane behind and beneath the tile, not the tile alone.

  • Handles standing water
  • Waterproofed shower assemblies
  • Slip-resistant finishes available

Moisture & Subfloor Prep

The slab is checked for moisture and flatness, old adhesive is cleared and the right underlayment or membrane is chosen for the floor going down.

  • Slab moisture checked
  • High and low spots corrected
  • Vapor barrier where required

Transitions & Finishing

Where LVP meets tile, at exterior doors and along the walls, the edges are finished with the correct transition, baseboard and sealant so water has fewer ways to get under the floor.

  • LVP-to-tile transitions
  • Baseboards and quarter round
  • Sealant at tubs and exterior doors

Our Process

How a waterproof flooring project runs

01

Walk the Home

We look at how each room is used, where water tends to show up and what is on the floor now.

02

Choose by Room

LVP, tile or a combination is recommended room by room, with samples to compare against your cabinets and light.

03

Check the Slab

Moisture and flatness are checked so preparation is in the written estimate before the job is booked.

04

Remove & Prepare

Old flooring comes out and the subfloor is cleaned, flattened and, where needed, given a moisture barrier or waterproofing membrane.

05

Install

Planks or tile are installed to the manufacturer's instructions, with expansion space for vinyl and full mortar coverage for tile.

06

Seal the Edges & Walk Through

Transitions, trim and sealant are completed and we walk the finished floor with you, including care instructions.

FAQ

Waterproof Flooring Questions

The planks are. A rigid-core vinyl plank does not absorb water or swell, so spills, pet accidents and wet mopping do not damage it. What it does not do is stop water from getting under the floor during a major leak or flood. If that happens the planks can often be lifted, the subfloor dried and the floor reinstalled, but the water underneath still has to be dealt with.

Both can work on a bathroom floor. LVP is fine for a powder room or a bathroom that stays reasonably dry. For a bathroom with a shower that is used every day, and for anything inside the shower itself, tile over a proper waterproofing system is the better long-term choice.

Waterproof LVP is the most common choice because accidents and water bowls do not harm it and it is easy to clean. Tile is harder still against claws. Neither is scratch-proof, so felt pads under furniture and a mat at the door for sand are worth having.

Yes. A waterproof plank follows the shape of the subfloor and can separate at the joints over dips and humps. A concrete slab can also release moisture from below, which the plank does not stop. Flatness and moisture are checked before installation for that reason.

It depends on the material, the square footage, what has to be removed and the condition of the subfloor. See our pricing page for how we price LVP and tile, or call (904) 520-1994 for a free written estimate.
