Tile Repair in Jacksonville, FL

A cracked tile, a tile that rocks underfoot or a few loose pieces in the shower do not always mean a new floor. Braga Remodeling removes the damaged tile, fixes what is underneath and sets new tile so the repair holds.

A tile rarely fails on its own. We look for the reason first — a void in the mortar, movement in the floor or water behind the wall — so the same spot does not come back.

Overview

Fixing the tile and the reason it failed

Tile is hard but not flexible. When a tile cracks, sounds hollow when tapped or comes loose, something under it has changed: the mortar never fully bonded, the slab developed a crack, a wood subfloor is flexing or water has been getting in. Gluing the piece back down hides the symptom for a while. A proper repair deals with the cause.

Repair makes sense when the damage is limited to a few tiles or one area, the rest of the floor or wall is solidly bonded, and matching tile is available. Leftover boxes from the original job are the best source, so check the garage or attic before the estimate. When matching tile cannot be found, we talk through options such as replacing a defined section, a threshold or a border so the change looks intentional.

Sometimes repair is not the honest answer. If hollow spots are spread across the room, tiles are tenting, or shower walls are soft behind the tile, the problem is the installation itself and patching individual pieces will not last. In that case we will tell you, and price a new tile installation in Jacksonville with the right floor preparation instead of selling you a repair that fails again.

What's Included

Tile repairs we handle

Cracked Tile Replacement

The cracked tile is cut out without disturbing its neighbors, the old mortar is removed and a new tile is set flat with the surrounding floor.

  • Single tiles or small areas
  • Crack in the slab checked underneath
  • Set flush with adjacent tile

Loose & Hollow Tile

Tiles that rock, click or sound hollow have lost their bond. We lift them, clean the back and the substrate, and reset them with full mortar coverage.

  • Tap test to map the hollow area
  • Old thinset ground off
  • Reset with proper mortar coverage

Shower Tile Repair

Loose wall tile, a failed soap niche or a cracked curb. We open the area, check the backing for moisture damage and rebuild it before any tile goes back.

  • Backing inspected once tile is off
  • Damaged board replaced
  • Corners and changes of plane sealed

Re-Grouting Touch-Ups

Around every repair the grout is cut out and replaced so the patch blends in. Cracked or missing grout elsewhere in the room can be handled on the same visit.

  • Grout color matched to existing
  • Joints cleaned to proper depth
  • Sealer applied where the grout calls for it

Our Process

How a tile repair is done

01

Assess

We tap-test the area, look for cracks and moisture, and tell you whether repair or replacement is the better call.

02

Remove Damaged Tile

Grout around the tile is cut out first, then the tile is removed carefully so the surrounding pieces are not chipped.

03

Prep the Substrate

Old mortar is ground off and the surface is cleaned and flattened. Cracks or damaged backing are addressed before setting.

04

Set the Tile

New tile is set in fresh mortar with full coverage, aligned to the existing joints and leveled to its neighbors.

05

Grout

Once the mortar has cured, joints are grouted in a matching color. Corners and transitions get flexible sealant.

06

Seal & Walk Through

Grout is sealed where required, the area is cleaned and we walk the repair with you before we leave.

FAQ

Tile Repair Questions

Yes, as long as a matching tile is available and the tiles around it are solidly bonded. We cut out the grout, remove the cracked piece, clean off the old mortar and set a new tile flush with the rest of the floor.

We will try to identify the tile and find a match, but discontinued tile and dye-lot differences are common. If an exact match is not available we can suggest a close match, pull a tile from a hidden spot such as a closet, or replace a defined section so the change looks deliberate.

A hollow sound means the tile is not fully bonded to what is underneath. It can come from poor mortar coverage during the original installation, movement in the slab or subfloor, or moisture. A few hollow tiles can be reset. Hollow spots across the whole room usually point to an installation problem.

When the failure is widespread: many loose or hollow tiles, tiles lifting or tenting, repeated cracks along the same line, or shower walls that feel soft. Patching in those cases does not last. We will explain what we found and give you a written estimate for a new tile installation instead.

It depends on how many tiles are involved, where they are, whether matching tile is on hand and what we find underneath. See our pricing page for how we price projects, or call (904) 520-1994 for a free written estimate.
