Overview
Two walk-in showers with the same tile can cost very different amounts. The difference is almost never the tile itself — it is what happens behind and beneath it. A shower that keeps its existing drain location and plumbing wall costs less to build than one where the drain moves across the slab or the shower grows into an old tub footprint.
Waterproofing is the step that separates a shower that lasts from one that causes damage. Shower pans, wall membranes, niches, benches and curb transitions all have to be sealed as one continuous system before tile goes on. In Florida humidity, skipping or rushing this step is how mold and subfloor damage start.
Glass is the other major cost driver. A simple fixed panel costs less than a full frameless enclosure with a door, and every custom cut, angle and hardware finish changes the scope. Tile size and layout matter too — large-format tile, intricate patterns and fully tiled ceilings take more labor than a straightforward wall layout.

The old tub or shower comes out, and the subfloor and wall framing are inspected. In older Jacksonville homes this is where hidden water damage is usually found.
The pan, walls, niches and bench are sealed as one continuous waterproof assembly. This is the most important labor in the project and the wrong place to cut scope.
Floor tile, wall tile, niche tile and any ceiling tile are set to the layout. Tile size, pattern complexity and grout choices change the labor involved.
Fixed panels, door panels or full enclosures are measured after tile is set. Custom sizes, angles and hardware finishes define this part of the scope.
Valve, shower head and drain locations are confirmed. Keeping the existing drain location costs less than moving it; new valve types may require wall access.
