Overview

Two different ways to build a shower

A custom tiled shower is built on site. The old surround comes out, the walls and floor are prepared, a sloped base and a continuous waterproofing system go in, and then tile is set piece by piece. Because it is built for the space, it can be any size, any shape and any combination of tile, niche, bench and drain. Our tile installation in Jacksonville page covers that process in more detail.

An acrylic shower system uses factory-made panels and a molded base, sized to your alcove and installed over or in place of the existing surround. The surfaces are smooth and seamless, with no grout, and the installation is fast because most of the work happens in the factory rather than in your bathroom.

Neither one is the wrong answer. The right choice depends on what you value most: speed and low upkeep, or customization and a shower built to be repaired and kept for a long time. Both are common ways to do a tub-to-shower conversion.

  • Tile: built for the space

Any size, layout, tile and drain

  • Acrylic: built for speed

    Factory panels, quick installation

  • Repairs differ

Replace one tile vs. patch or replace a panel

  • Upkeep differs

Grout care vs. gentle surface cleaning

Side by Side

How tile and acrylic showers compare

Design Flexibility

Tile is the clear winner here. You choose the tile, pattern, niche locations, bench, drain style and glass, and the shower can be any dimension, including a curbless walk-in shower. Acrylic systems come in a set range of colors, patterns and base sizes, which is fine for a standard alcove but limiting for anything unusual.

  • Tile: unlimited layouts and finishes
  • Acrylic: a catalog of panels and bases
  • Odd sizes and curbless entries favor tile

Durability & Lifespan

Porcelain tile is extremely hard and resists scratches, heat and fading. A tiled shower's lifespan depends mostly on the waterproofing behind it. Acrylic is tough and non-porous but softer, so it can scratch, dull or discolor over time, especially with abrasive cleaners. How long either lasts comes down to product quality, installation and care.

  • Tile surface is very hard-wearing
  • Acrylic is softer and can scratch
  • Installation quality matters for both

Repairability

A cracked tile can be cut out and replaced with a matching one, which is why keeping a few spare tiles is worth it. Grout and caulk can be renewed. A cracked acrylic panel or base can sometimes be patched, but the repair is often visible, and serious damage usually means replacing the whole piece.

  • Tile: replace a single piece
  • Acrylic: patch or replace the panel
  • Keep spare tile from your project

Grout Maintenance, Honestly

Grout is the real upkeep cost of a tiled shower. It needs regular cleaning, and cement grout benefits from sealing. Larger tile means fewer grout lines, and modern stain-resistant grouts cut the work considerably, but tile will never be as wipe-and-go as a seamless acrylic wall. If you want the least cleaning possible, acrylic has the edge.

  • Acrylic: no grout lines to clean
  • Large-format tile reduces grout
  • Stain-resistant grout options

Installation Timeline

Acrylic systems are often installed in about a day once the panels arrive. A tiled shower takes days, because demolition, the sloped base, waterproofing, cure times, tile, grout and glass each need their own step. If a bathroom being out of service is a hardship, that difference is significant.

  • Acrylic: often about one day on site
  • Tile: several days of sequenced work
  • Custom glass adds lead time to either

Cost Factors

There is no universal answer on which costs more. Acrylic pricing is driven by the product line, wall height and accessories. Tile pricing is driven by labor, tile choice, shower size, drain type, niches, benches and glass. One-Day vs. Full Remodel

Is a one-day shower really enough?

01

What the Pitch Gets Right

A one-day installation is real, and it is a genuine benefit. Less disruption, one bathroom back in service quickly and no grout to maintain are all honest advantages.

02

What One Day Leaves Out

Speed leaves less time to open up walls and deal with what is behind them. Ask any installer how they check for moisture damage, soft framing or old plumbing before new surfaces go on.

03

What a Full Remodel Adds

A tiled shower is rebuilt from the framing out. The walls are opened and inspected, the base is sloped to the drain, and the waterproofing is tested before tile goes on.

04

The Fair Trade-Off

You trade days of work for a shower designed around your space. If the existing walls are sound and you want it done fast, one day can be the right call.

FAQ

Tile vs. Acrylic Shower Questions

It depends on your priorities. Tile is the better fit when you want a custom size or layout, specific finishes, a curbless entry or a shower you can repair piece by piece over many years. Acrylic is the better fit when you want the fastest installation and the least cleaning in a standard-size alcove.

Both can last a long time when they are installed well and cared for. Porcelain tile is harder and more scratch-resistant, and individual tiles and grout can be repaired or renewed. Acrylic is softer and harder to repair invisibly. For a tiled shower, the waterproofing behind the tile is what really determines its lifespan.

It takes more effort than a seamless panel, and it is fair to say so. Regular cleaning, good ventilation and sealing cement grout keep it in good shape. Choosing larger tile on the walls and a stain-resistant grout reduces the upkeep a lot.

Small cracks and chips can sometimes be patched with a repair kit, though the patch may be visible. Larger cracks, especially in the base, often mean replacing that component. With tile, a single damaged tile can usually be removed and replaced.

It varies with the size of the shower, the products chosen and the condition of the walls and floor, so either can come out higher. The only reliable comparison is two written estimates describing the full scope. See our pricing page, or call (904) 520-1994 for a free in-home written estimate on a tile shower.
