Shower Guide • Jacksonville, FL
A doorless walk-in shower has no door to clean, opens up a small bathroom and works well for aging in place. It also has to be planned so the water stays inside. This guide covers the size, glass, slope and drain decisions we walk through before building one.

Overview
Without a door, the layout does the job a door would do. The shower needs enough depth that the spray does not reach the opening, a floor that slopes to the drain, and a showerhead aimed away from the entry. Get those right and a doorless shower stays as dry as a framed one.
Most doorless showers we plan use a fixed glass panel on one side, which blocks spray while keeping the open entry. A fully open shower without glass needs more room.
Every shower we build sits on a continuous waterproofing system. For a curbless entry, see our curbless walk-in shower page; for overall pricing, see the walk-in shower cost guide.

Size
A doorless shower needs more floor area than a shower with a door. As a planning guide, more depth beyond the spray zone and a longer shower with the entry at the far end from the showerhead keep water in. In a small Jacksonville hall bath, a partial glass panel often makes it possible in the tub space. We measure the room and tell you honestly if a door would work better.
Drain
A center drain needs the floor sloped in four directions, which works with smaller tiles. A linear drain along the back wall lets the floor slope in one direction, so large-format tile can run across the floor and the entry can be lower. Both work; the choice depends on tile size and whether you want a curb.
Comfort
Open showers feel cooler because steam escapes. A well-placed exhaust fan helps the bathroom dry out in Florida humidity, and a rain head plus a handheld on a slide bar gives control over where the water goes.
