Flooring Guide • Jacksonville, FL
Luxury vinyl plank and porcelain tile are the two floors most Jacksonville homeowners compare. Both handle water better than wood or laminate, but they behave very differently on a Florida slab, under bare feet and when something goes wrong. Here is how we help people choose, room by room.

Overview
Porcelain tile is the harder, longer-lasting surface and the right choice for showers and wet floors. LVP is warmer, quieter, faster to install and easier on joints, and it is usually the better value for bedrooms, living areas and whole-house projects.
Many Jacksonville homes end up with both: tile in bathrooms and sometimes the kitchen, LVP everywhere else. The important part is planning the transitions so the two floors meet at the same height.
Cost depends more on preparation than on the material: what has to come out, how flat the slab is and how many rooms and transitions there are. Our LVP cost guide and tile cost guide break those lines out.
Water
Both resist water; only tile belongs in the shower
Comfort
LVP is warmer and quieter underfoot
Durability
Porcelain resists scratches and heat best
Speed
LVP installs faster with less dust
Room by room
Shower floors and walls: tile, over a proper waterproofing system. LVP is not a shower material.
Bathroom floors: both work. Tile is the classic choice; waterproof LVP is fine for a bathroom floor outside the shower if the edges are sealed as the manufacturer requires.
Kitchens: both work. Tile handles dropped hot pans and heavy appliances best; LVP is easier on feet and dishes.
Bedrooms and living areas: LVP is usually preferred for comfort and noise, especially upstairs and in condos.
Sunrooms and rooms with big glass doors: tile handles heat and sun better. Some LVP products have limits on direct sun and temperature, so we check the product's instructions.
Florida slabs
Both floors need a flat slab, but tile is less tolerant of dips and humps. LVP needs the manufacturer's moisture protection over concrete. Either way we check the slab before quoting.
Repairs
A cracked tile can be replaced, but matching grout and finding the same tile years later can be hard; keeping a box of spares helps. A damaged LVP plank can usually be swapped, which is easier near the edges of the room. Keep extra planks from the same lot.
